Book Repair and Preservation Series in Indianapolis

Could your library collections benefit from a little TLC?

MCLS will be hosting three hands-on workshops which focus on assisting you in maintaining your library’s collection.  All three will be held at our MCLS Indianapolis office, 6202 Morenci Trail, Indianapolis, IN 46268.

April 15  – Book Repair: An Introduction will teach you how to perform simple and effective repairs on books in your general collection. You will learn to assess the nature of the damage, decide on an appropriate treatment and carry out several repair techniques. Approved for six general LEUs. May 6 – Advanced Book Repair will build on the skills learned in the Introduction class to expand your skills in the care of your library collections. Skills you will learn include how to reattach covers, how to re-sew loose sections of pages, how to protect thin, pamphlet-type materials as well as how to make a new cover for a book. Approved for seven general LEUs. Click here for online registration.

June 1 – Archival Book and Paper Repair and Preservation for Circulating and Non-Rare Materials will focus on caring for older materials in circulating collections or public files (maps, photographs, subject files, etc.). Skills you will learn include how to clean paper and books, treat red rot, inner and outer hinge repair as well as wet and dry paper repair techniques. Approved for seven general LEUs. A tool kit that you can take home will be provided in the Introduction class and other materials will be provided throughout all sessions. You are urged to bring several items in need of repair to work on during these sessions. Register today…space is limited!
