Meet peer libraries Hastings Public Library and Monticello-Union Township Public Library

Two more of our member public libraries have been paired up through the MCLS “Library Match” program. The Hastings Public Library in Hastings, MI and the Monticello-Union Township Public Library in Monticello, IN have been paired up to learn from one another and share ideas, solutions, and mutual inspiration.

What makes them a match?

Hastings Public Library

The Hastings Public Library, led by Director Laura Ortiz is located in Hastings, MI and serves a population of about 13,230. Hastings is an “up and coming” small community where the support is abundant.  According to Ortiz, “We have a strong sense of family, community, the arts, and volunteerism.”

Monticello-Union Township Public Library

The Monticello-Union Township Public Library, led by Director Monica Casanova, is located in Monticello, IN and serves a population of about 10,561. Monticello is a rural community that is also a tourist destination, with Indiana Beach, a theme park, and two lakes.  According to Casanova, in the summer, the population doubles.

What will they offer their peer library?

Monticello-Union Township Public Library

The Monticello-Union Township Public Library is open to sharing ideas for programming, networking, and mentoring.

What do they hope to learn from their peer library?

Ortiz says, “Collaborating with a sister library on what works and what doesn’t is such a great idea.” She says, “We are all librarians trying our best to serve the community in which we live. In this world where everything is being digitized, the library needs to remain relevent to our patrons. How do we accomplish this without being willing to change and seeking advice from our fellow librarians?”

Casanova says, “I’d like for our library to grow, get ideas, improve in outputs such as circulation, people count, etc., but also in outcomes.” She says, “I hope our library can gain new ideas and become inspired by our sister library.”
