Michigan COLD libraries PS group to hold workshop

Join the Michigan COLD libraries (Council of Library Directors) Public Service group for a workshop on new approaches to recruiting, training, and evaluating library student employees.

Kristin Meyer (User Experience Manager), Jen Torreano (Evening Operations and User Services Manager) and Brian Merry (Head of Operations and User Services) from Grand Valley State University will lead a workshop on student assistant training and development on Thursday, March 5, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the University of Michigan, Dearborn. This workshop is designed for anyone who supervises and has contact with academic library student workers. This workshop, entitled “New Approaches to Recruiting, Training, and Evaluating Library Student Employees”, is a repeat of last year’s Spring workshop on the same topic. Lunch and morning refreshments will be provided.

Topics covered include:

  • Understanding the current and emerging role of student assistants in the functioning of an academic library
  • New approaches to hiring and recruitment, including peer hiring
  • Creative training tools and methods
  • Skill identification and development
  • Orientation and training program development
  • Evaluation and performance reviews, including peer evaluations
  • Participants will engage in discussion and hands-on activities and will leave the workshop with an outline of a strategic plan for defining, recruiting, training, and evaluating library student employees.
