Slate of Nominees for MCLS Board Elections in 2014

The MCLS Board of Directors has accepted the Nominating Committee’s proposed slate of candidates for the five seats whose terms expire at the end of December 2014.

Electronic voting to approve the slate of candidates begins on September 15. All Member Representatives should receive an email on September 15 with voting instructions. Votes will be accepted via an online ballot. The voting deadline is 5:00 pm ET on September 26. Election results will be announced at the MCLS Annual Meeting on October 3, 2014.

The following slate is presented to the membership for approval:

Academic Library Representative (Indiana)

Nancy Kirkpatrick, Library Director, Marian University

Education: BA, Drake University; JD, University of Richmond; MS, University of Illinois @ Urbana-Champaign

Work Experience: Nancy S. Kirkpatrick is the Library Director at Marian University in Indianapolis. She earned a BA in Journalism from Drake University and a JD from the University of Richmond School of Law. She practiced law in Minnesota for several years before putting her career on hold to be a full-time parent. In 2005, she was named a Spectrum Scholar by the American Library Association and subsequently earned an MS in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has been at Marian University since 2011, as Assistant Library Director for nine months before transitioning into the Director role. Nancy was invited to speak at the 2013 Indiana Black Librarians Network annual meeting, and presented at the 2011 ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans. She has attended the Harvard Leadership Institute for Academic Librarians (2012) and the Women’s Leadership Institute (2011). Nancy is currently working on a manuscript for Library Juice Press, for a volume to be published in early 2015, on the experiences of people of color in academia, law and librarianship.

Statement: I reap the benefits of the services and databases that are offered to my library by the MCLS and would like to contribute to the decision making processes. I bring to the table over thirty years of experience in special libraries and can provide the solo special librarian perspective.

Statement: I have served on several statewide committees (MLA, LSTA, MeLCat) with the focus of improving resource sharing and the promotion of library services.  I think the creation of MCLS and the opportunity to serve a larger area and aggregate more resources is the logical step to providing better services locally.  MCLS has the resource sharing knowledge and is positioned to deliver training and foster collaboration on a broad range of topics.

Research Library Representative (Michigan)

Bryan Skib, Associate University Librarian for Collections University of Michigan – Ann Arbor

Education:  A.B. Princeton University; M.A. University of Michigan

Work experience: I have worked for 25 years in a variety of roles at the University of Michigan, initially in the provision of public services in History, European Studies and Religion. I served as Coordinator of Collection Development for the Hatcher Graduate Library (2001-2007), then Collection Development Officer for University Library (2007-2011), and currently as Associate University Librarian for Collections. As a member of the Library’s senior management team, I contribute to Library-wide strategic planning. My current responsibilities include overall management of the materials budget, collection development strategy, Special Collections operations, preservation of library materials, document delivery activities, and library technical services.

Professional Activities: I have been active in several academic and library associations, particularly the Western European Studies Section of the Association of College and Research Libraries, serving as Section Chair in 2006-2007. Other affiliations include the American Historical Association, the Society for French Historical Studies, and the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services. I serve on the Collections and Services Policy Committee of the Center for Research Libraries, the Hathi Trust Collections Committee and a number of publisher and vendor advisory groups.

Statement: MCLS provides a variety of valuable services to libraries of all sorts across the states of Michigan and Indiana, including training, discounted group pricing for databases, and support for robust resource sharing. Given fiscal constraints, collaboration in all forms will become ever more essential to the success of our library services, particularly through sharing our expertise and our information resources. My university benefits from participation in MCLS, and I would be pleased to serve the membership as a research library representative on the Board of Directors.

School Library Representative (Michigan)

Judy Hauser, Information Media Consultant, Oakland Schools Information Center

Education: BA, Anthropology, Oakland University; MA, Anthropology, Western Michigan University and MILS, Information and Library Studies, The University of Michigan

Work Experience: I began working at Oakland Schools in 1985 on a grant-funded project to provide software for schools. The project ran for two years. When the project ended the director of the Oakland Schools library asked me to apply for a library position. After a short time I began the MILS program at the University of Michigan. Approximately one year after receiving the MILS I was promoted to Consultant. In my capacity I have provided training and consultations on databases and technology to educators in Oakland County K-12 schools. I also run the Information Center with responsibilities that include curating the book and periodical collections and cataloging materials.

Professional Activities: In 2013 I was appointed to the Library of Michigan Board of Trustees; “The Web and Parents: Are You Tech Savvy?” Book published in 2009.

Statement: Although the Oakland Schools Information Center has been a member for years I do not claim to be an expert on the MCLS services and resources.  Looking at school libraries in particular I would like to see how MCLS could work with the collaboration between school and public libraries with resources and services. Honestly, I don’t know what this would look like or how it would work but the role of MCLS is already a presence in many libraries so it is, perhaps, worth some discussion. I also see MCLS in a role to create MeL-related materials that would be used by K-12 teachers, school librarians and students.
